Dev Deepawali 2025 in Varanasi – A Night of a Million Diyas

If there’s one festival in India that truly captures the magic of lights and devotion, it has to be Dev Deepawali. Celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of Kartik month, it’s known as the “Festival of Lights of the Gods” a time when the ghats of Varanasi are illuminated like heaven on earth.

Why is Dev Deepawali Celebrated?

According to Hindu mythology, the Gods descend to the Ganga on this night to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura. The ghats are decorated with millions of diyas, and devotees offer prayers and take holy dips in the river, creating an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical.

Experiencing Dev Deepawali

I had the chance to witness Dev Deepawali in person, and it was surreal. From the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat to the quiet corners where diyas float gently on the water, every moment felt like stepping into a painting. For photographers, the festival provides breathtaking visuals, while travelers and pilgrims experience a profound sense of peace.

Tips for Travelers

  • Arrive early to get a good spot on the ghats.

  • Book accommodations well in advance, as the city gets crowded.

  • Carry light essentials and wear comfortable shoes
navigating the ghats can be tricky.

  • Respect the traditions and local customs  it’s as much about the experience as it is about the festival.
